Rockets star Gerald Green’s I-45 tattoo is cool. But a comedian has an idea for a better one.

After 20 years spent on the road as a professional comic, it’s no surprise that one of John Wessling’s funniest tweets of all time had to do with U.S. Highway 290.

Wessling, 42, was traveling between standup gigs Tuesday and had just arrived at his hotel room in Miami. He decided to turn on the Houston Rockets game; they were facing off against the Utah Jazz and could clinch their playoff series with a win.

"The Rockets were trailing a bit and Gerald Green came in the game and gave the team a little spark, as he does often," Wessling told Chron.com over Twitter direct message. "I think I had made a joke onstage before about his I-45 tattoo that was similar, but at that moment I saw the perfect timing and the phrasing of it just poured out."

The result was a joke that has echoed around social media days later.

"I like Gerald Green’s I-45 tattoo, but if he was REALLY H-TINE he’d have a 290 tattoo and it would be unfinished," Wessling tweeted.

Wessling fell asleep shortly after sending the tweet. When he woke up Wednesday to catch a flight, his Twitter mentions "were on fire."

Rockets guard Gerald Green took a family furniture shopping at Rooms To Go to replace items lost due to flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

"It’s funny…you never know which things are going to take off and which are going to be duds. I’ve written what I think are jewels that have gone nowhere before and sometimes a throwaway line gets a huge response," Wessling added. "But I really appreciate all the Houston Twitter people who’ve laughed at my joke and spread it around. I hope they come back for more of my foolishness tomorrow and the next days after."

The message would go on to collect nearly 700 retweets and 2,082 likes. It also earned a post on Reddit’s r/houston where folks piled on the jokes.

"290 will never be finis," Reddit user doyoudovoodoo commented.

"If he really was H tine, he wouldn’t have a 290 tattoo because that shit is outside the loop," JMyorJMan added.

The Rockets won its series against Utah and face off against the Golden State Warriors Monday in the NBA Conference Finals.
